The Gestalt laws describe how we interpret the complex world around us. Gestalt psychology focuses on how our minds organize and interpret visual data. It emphasizes on the fact that whole of anything is greater than it's parts.
In this assignment I have composed a set up with a 15 * 15cm half cube and 3D shapes with my understanding of gestalt laws.
The law of similarity states that similar things tend to appear grouped together. In this case the similarity occurs in the form of shape, shadow and color as the cylinders appears to be a group.
According to the law of proximity, things that are close together seem more related than things that are spaced farther apart. In this case cylinder close to to cube and tetrahedron appears to be forming a group with them instead of being identical to the other cylinder because of the law of proximity.
The law of continuity holds that points that are connected by straight or curving lines are seen in a way that follows the smoothest path. In other words, elements in a line or curve seem more related to one another than those positioned randomly. The cylinder in this case appears to be grouped together because of their placement at same height.
The Gestalt law of common region says that when elements are located in the same closed region, we perceive them as belonging to the same group. In this composition the cylinder, cube and tetrahedron are in the common group as they are in the same region (half cube). The two identical cylinders does not form group because they are placed in different regions as per gestalt law of common region.
