Drawing as per age groups

Writer's picture: DEEKSHA SHARMADEEKSHA SHARMA

This fun project was about stepping out of your age and drawing with the perception of a two year old, 10 year old and 15 year old. It was intriguing to understand that its not only about observing but also to become a child while doing this exercise. The exercise has 3 sets of two drawings from all three age groups. One with guidance and one without any guidance.

2 year old

Here, I tried to recreate a 2 year old kid's drawing. On observation I realized that kids at that age grip the crayon in fist and practice their newly developed motor skills by scribbling. They usually pick-up brightest of colors and draw spirals and scratched lines, without any specific shapes or forms.

2 year old ( Under guidance)

At this age kids are guided in direction to develop understanding of shapes and forms. Parents usually draw and ask kids to replicate common shapes. Down the memory lane, I remember my mom used to ask me to draw an apple or a mouse for her. The knowledge of basic colors is also parted to them at this age.

10 year old

Kids at this age tries to create things out of fantasy, the fiction and fairy tales give wings to their imagination. Their thoughts are not anchored by the weights of reality. I remember drawing objects without any referential space at this age.

10 year old (Under guidance)

With guidance the kid tries to create an entire scene with referential surroundings which probably makes his story self explanatory. The sketch under the guidance is more detailed and more realistic approach. The carefree approach takes a back seat depicted by the harnesses of the hot air balloon in this drawing.

15 year old

I made this drawing at the age of 15. This is the age when the kids tends to learn the basics of drawing and explores the abstraction. The idea was to depict women's suffrage in the society by creating illusion of bars, done with harsh strokes.

15 year old (Under guidance)

With guidance the drawing was refined and use of specif cool and warm color was used to create a contrast. The illusion was created with grids.

At the end of the project, I learnt to look at things from various perspectives. I believe, sometimes it becomes necessary to step out of a mind frame to create something extraordinary. This was a fun activity in the journey to "unlearn to learn".
