The principles of design describe the ways that artists or designers use the elements of art in a work of art or design.

Balance - is the distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, texture, and space. If the design was a scale, these elements should be balanced to make a design feel stable. In symmetrical balance, the elements used on one side of the design are similar to those on the other side; in asymmetrical balance, the sides are different but still look balanced. In radial balance, the elements are arranged around a central point and may be similar.

Balance in sight

In this image the visual weight of color is equally distributed in the entire picture and hence creating balance in the image.

Balance in sound

The beats that I experienced in the durga puja pandal were in perfect balance to me. The balance here is in the rhythm of the music.

Balance in touch

The shell or the shankh that we blow during religious rituals gives a sense of involute symmetry and a feeling of balance when held in hand. Involute symmetry is when the distribution of elements is in symmetrical manner that grows proportionately.

Balance in taste

A tea tastes perfect when there is a right balance of tea leaves, milk, water and sugar in it. I find the balance in taste in a perfect cup of tea.

Balance in Smell

Garam masala being the key ingredient in Indian cooking is a perfect blend of whole spices like bay leaves, cumin, black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, nutmeg, mace, coriander seeds and star anise. All these whole spices have very distinct aromas and when blend together the garam masala gives the flavor and smell to the delicacies that we eat everyday. The garam masala is a perfect balance of aroma that we experience on everyday basis.

Proportion - is the visual size and weight of elements in a composition and how they relate to each other. It is the feeling of unity created when all parts (sizes, amounts, or number) relate well with each other. When drawing the human figure, proportion can refer to the size of the head compared to the rest of the body.

Proportion in sight

The lamps in both the image gives a sense of proportion, in the first pictures it depicts different sizes whereas in the second image it gives a sense of perspective because of difference in proportions.

Proportion in sound

The piano cover gives a sense of proportion in the music because of consistent change in scale.

Proportion in touch

While trying to stack the stones like Buddhists do as a form of prayer, I felt the sense of proportion in the form of touch. To balance the stones, the proportion has to be kept in mind to balance the structure. The process of stacking stones as a form of prayer is meditative and evokes the sense of touch.

Proportion in taste

Very mild taste of salt in the salted caramel cheese cake, gives the sense of right proportion of taste of salt to balance out the sweetness of caramel. This contrasting combination enhances the taste even more when added in a particular proportion.

Proportion in smell

Smell of vanilla in caramel custard gives a sense of right proportion with the taste of caramel and custard.

Rhythm - is created when one or more elements of design are used repeatedly to create a feeling of organized movement. Rhythm creates a mood like music or dancing. To keep rhythm exciting and active, variety is essential.

Rhythm in sight

The image with staircase and wooden roof in perspective gives a sense of rhythm to it.

Rhythm in sound

The music in the movie Amelie gives the sense of rhythm. It is used as a background score to show the movement as the movie commences.

Rhythm in touch

Wearing bangles and touching it with the other hand gives a sense of rhythm of touch.

Rhythm in taste

There is a sense of rhythm in how we chew an apple and taste releases with its juices.

Rhythm in smell

I find a sense of rhythm in how the fragrance of jasmine flower comes flowing with evening breeze in the house.

Emphasis - is when the eye movement starts from that part of design and catches the attention first. That one area stand out by contrasting with other areas. The area could be different in size, color, texture, shape, etc.

Emphasis in sight

The red ripened tomato in the image gives a sense of emphasis amongst the raw green tomatoes which directs our eye movement in the picture.

Emphasis in sound

Sound of thunder in the gives a sense of emphasis in the consistent sound of nature.

Emphasis in touch

The hand embroidery on print in the cushion gives a sense of emphasis when touched.

Emphasis in taste

The hard mint has a strong sense emphasis on the flavor of saunf in it's taste.

Emphasis in smell

When it just starts to rain and there is this beautiful smell that makes you think just about the rains and nothing else gives a sense of emphasis in smell to me.

Unity is the feeling of harmony between all parts of the work of art, which creates a sense of completeness.

Unity in sight

The composition of pressed flowers gives a sense of unity in the composition.

Unity in sound

The sound of ghungroo gives a sense of unity in sound as each ghungroo comes together to create that sound.

Unity in touch

The bubble wrap feels like unity in touch.

Unity in taste

The motichoor ladoo gives a sense of taste in unity as each boondi together forms the ladoo and gives the exquisite taste and texture.

Unity in smell -

Mogra flowers garland creates a sense of smell in unity.

I have experienced and used principles of design working as a designer before. But this assignment was very insightful as it gave us opportunity to understand it through all senses. I believe this way the understanding of it became even stronger and hard to forget.
